Kulisa-Tierney Preserve

Kulisa-Tierney Preserve—the last 21.33 acres of remaining unprotected lands that belonged to local conservationist and DCLT founder Chet Kulisa—is located on the northern end of a 1.5 mile long farm landscape that stretches all the way down to the junction of Marsh Road and Dudley-Oxford Road in Dudley. In fact, Marsh Road has been designated as a scenic road by the Town of Dudley which reflects the beauty of the area with its stone walls, meadows, and farm fields.

The property is 21.33+/- acres of land located at Whiting Road, Oxford, Massachusetts, with small sections of the land extending into the Towns of Charlton and Dudley. It is located primarily in Oxford and abuts Mass Audubon lands to the east of the property. Both the DCLT and Mass Audubon have made the northeastern corner of Dudley and southwestern corner of Oxford a focus area given its extensive core habitat and agricultural history. Kulisa-Tierney Preserve abuts land already conserved, including 580 acres of Mass Audubon protected land and 20+ acres of DCLT protected land, and includes a variety of habitats including open grassland, pools and streams, forests, and dense shrub cover, all of which provide habitat for wildlife.

The mostly wooded property includes an old farm field, a vernal pool, a 19th-century cemetery, and a tri-town marker straddling the towns of Dudley, Oxford, and Charlton. The property is enhanced with a 3-acre field; a vernal pool; and beautiful mixed hardwood and softwood forest. There is also a tri-town property boundary marker on the southwest portion of the property that provides a unique landmark worth seeking out by future visitors. DCLT’s purchase of this property was particularly important due to the nearly 1,000 feet of road frontage, which would have allowed for a minimum of six houses, extensively disrupting local wildlife habitats along this corridor.

DCLT purchased the property in 2026 with support from a Massachusetts EEA Conservation Partnership grant, Bafflin Foundation, Fields Pond Foundation, Cecelia J. Smolenski-Millette Charitable Trust, Lithia4Kids, the 30×30 Catalyst Fund, and numerous personal donations from community members and businesses.
