Slater Woods

Slater Woods is an approximate 75 acre parcel of mature 2nd growth forest of oak, maple, and pine in the northeast corner of Dudley. The acquisition of Slater Woods represents the connecting link in a 1.5 mile long greenway connecting DCLT holdings along Peter Pond in Dudley with Mass Audubon holdings along Dudley-Oxford Road in Dudley. With Slater Woods now held for conservation, there are almost 250 acres of DCLT Mass Audubon protected land along the greenway.

Trails
- Rugged, challenging hilly trail, leading to Peter Pond and back. Allow at least 3 hours to complete trail.
Special Features
- Hilly terrain, numerous lichen covered rock outcroppings, verdant wetlands, pristine Peter Pond, a vernal pool surrounded by button bush and sphagnum moss.
- Trees include an abundance of oak, maple, and chestnut sprouts.
- Low vegetation includes princess pine, blueberries and a variety of fungi.
- The sanctuary abuts 200 + acres of land owned by Mass Audubon, and is part of a much larger 1,000+ acre designated as a Heritage Landscape by the town.
Directions to Trailhead
- Begin path at Kiosk on Dudley/Oxford Road to T-junction and turn left onto the Old County Road in about ¼ mile, Slater Woods trail is on right. Look for blue markers to Peter Pond and yellow markers to return.
Rules
- Open sunrise to sunset year round.
- Hunting permitted during season. No hunting on Sundays.
- Please carry out anything you carry in.
- Please no fires, smoking, alcohol consumption or motorized vehicles.
- Dogs must be leashed at all times.
Trail Safety
- Please stay on trails for your safety and safety of wildlife.
- Poison Ivy and ticks are common in Massachusetts, so learn how to identify each and wear proper footgear.
- Dogs must be on-leash at all times.
- Wear bright clothing during hunting season.
- Carry water to stay hydrated.
- Check yourself for ticks following your hike.
